How I tested

Step 4: Attach the VESA plate to the monitor

Lay the monitor face down on a soft surface. A towel works. Attach the VESA plate with the screws provided. Tighten them firmly, but don't gorilla them. You're not changing a tire.

Then slide the monitor onto the arm's head. Most arms click or lock into place. The Ergotron LX has a satisfying snap. The VIVO dual mount takes a bit more fiddling.

Step 5: Adjust tension and balance

This is where most people give up and call it a day. Don't. The tension adjustment is what makes the arm hold your monitor at the exact height you want. If it's too loose, the monitor sags. Too tight, and you can't move it.

Start with the monitor at center position. Adjust the gas spring tension until the monitor stays put when you let go. Then test at full extension. If it droops, tighten. If it springs up, loosen.

The AmazonBasics arm has a hex key adjustment on the gas spring. The Ergotron LX uses a similar system but with a better range. Budget arms like the NB North Bayou have a narrower sweet spot. My 29" ultrawide sagged on the North Bayou no matter how much I tightened it. That's the difference between a $40 arm and a $249 arm.

Step 6: Cable management

Run your cables through the arm's channel before you finalize the position. Check that the channel fits your cables. A thick DisplayPort cable and a power cable together are the standard test. If they don't fit, you'll be zip-tying cables to the arm, which looks terrible.

The Ergotron LX has a clean channel. The AmazonBasics arm is nearly identical. The VIVO dual mount is adequate. The North Bayou? The channel is tight. I've had to use slim cables.

VIVO Dual Monitor Mount

The budget king at $89. It holds two 24-inch monitors fine, it's adjustable, and it's a solid value. But the tilt joint stripped after four months on mine. Should you buy the AmazonBasics arm?

If you want 90% of the Ergotron experience for half the price, yes. It's the best value in monitor arms. The gas spring might not last six years, but it'll last longer than anything else at this price.

Should you buy the VIVO dual mount?
